Mutu

Um..no it is not the curry fish head. It is something I came across in someone’s blog one day and the post talked about core weakness and diastasis recti. It was a lightbulb moment for me that day. See, I was aware of a few things about myself post-childbirth :

1. My stomach muscles were stretched out and there is a gap in between. I used to have flat tummy in my younger days, and had no problem looking pretty in clothes, showing midriff and all that. But after baby, no more. Even when I went down to my pre-pregnancy weight, even when I went below my pre-pregnancy weight, I had this loose tummy that just would not go away and made me look like I was perpetually 3 months pregnant. After giving birth to my first baby, some kind of a physiotherapist came into my ward and did a test on me, and she told me matter-of-factly that my gap was about 3 fingers wide. I could not remember what exercise she recommended. Her whole visit took merely 5 minutes at most. It was a total blur. With each baby, the situation got worse. Don’t forget I grew big babies. My babies were all 8-10 pounders. When I was 3 months pregnant, I looked like I was 5; when I was 5 months pregnant, I had people asking me whether I was going to pop any time. I kind of resigned to the fact that this loose stomach thing was something I had to live with for the rest of my life.

2. Post-babies, I always felt I walked funny and I felt I was not quite balance. The feeling was a bit like having one leg shorter than the other. I tried to do some pilates, but I didn’t feel it helped. I thought I should get some chiropractic treatment but the cost put me off. I knew I had a problem but I didn’t know how to solve it. Since the feeling of not in balance did not affect my day to day life, I just didn’t think much about it.

3. I had backache and hip pain often. I tried to change my mattress, change my pillow, etc but they only helped some. I thought it was the aftermath of carrying and giving birth to three big babies as well as a sign of age. Oh, and the result of my younger days vanity of wearing 4 inch heels all day long. Again, something I just had to learn to live with. Sigh.

4. My pelvic floor muscles were not exactly performing up to standard. I could only be thankful that they were not worse. Enough said about this.

When I read that blog post and about diastasis recti, it all clicked for me! I knew I had this host of problems but I did not know they were all related! I did not have a few problems, I only had one! Finally, I could make some sense of things. The best news was that things could be made better! I was so excited that I told my hubby that this would be his Christmas present to me, and I bought the Mutu Focus Programme.

Since December last year, I started on the Focus Programme. I was surprised how easy and effortless it was. All it took was about 10-15 minutes a day and the exercises were not hard at all. There are 4 phases in the programme and right now I am at Phase 3. Although I told myself I should do it every day consistently, I was not the most disciplined person so I think on the average, I did it about 3-4 times a week. During the Christmas and Chinese New Year festivities, I fell off the wagon and only picked it back up after the holidays.

Despite being so inconsistent my DR went from 3 to 3.5 finger width when I first started to about 1 to 1.5 now. I am ecstatic at the improvement! Besides having the gap closed so much, right from the first weeks, I felt my balance improved a great deal. Now, I don’t get this going-to-tip-over-to-one-side feeling when I walk. I don’t get hip pain so much. In fact, I don’t remember when was the last time I had hip pain. I still get some backache but not as much. As for my pelvic floor muscles, I have yet to really test it but I am keeping my fingers crossed!!

Now, I am seriously thinking of upgrading to the 12 Week Programme, mainly because I want to work on my weight a bit. OK, I am nowhere near overweight, but I am terribly vain and would like to be slim. Now that I am feeling better, I feel I want to do some workout, if not for losing weight, then at least for keeping fit.
