Yet another fish dish! You can get ‘tung choe’ (Cantonese) or ‘Tong Cao’ (mandarin) from medicine hall. It is a herb used in Chinese herbal remedies. According to the author, when it is cooked with carp, “it has the effect of increasing milk flow for the new mothers.”
1 Carp, approx. 600g
20g Tung Choe (Tong Cao)
800ml Hot water
Remove gills from carp. Do not scale or gut. Rinse thoroughly and drain.
Put the prepared carp and tung choe in a tureen. Add the water. Cover and double boil over medium-low heat for 2 hours.
Drain soup and drink it warm. The fish need not be eaten.
** This recipe is taken from Chinese Pregnancy & Confinement Cookbook by Ng Siong Mui. An excellent recipe book that I love and used for my own confinement. It has plenty of delicious recipes that are good even for a normal day’s meal. I haven’t been able to find it in bookshops these days but it is available in the National Library.
